Complete LineUp and Playing Times

Here are The Playing Times.

If you are going to the festival the playing times are also available (along with maps, directions, rules, tips on what to bring and everything you might need) in The Little Golden Booklet. We recomend you take a copy with you.

The Supernatural Amphitheatre is capable of providing an extraordinary array of Atmospheric Conditions over The Journey. With this in mind, exquisite performing artists from all over the planet are invited to perform at certain times when collective wisdom dictates that the environmental ambience is most appropriate. The Sky as Enhancer; The Bush as Dancer. Dead of Night, crazy lights, morning light, afternoon delight. Nameless o’clock, Silence Wedge, afternoon buzz, sunset lull, primetime spike…KABLOOEY.

An EPIC SONIC PANORAMA, finetuned to its participants and environs.

And this year’s Panoramarists? Mavericks. Islands. Pirates. Lifers. Sweet republics in a continent of noise. ARTISTS, all of them. Here to wind things out, here to wuck things up. Here for fun.

MOGWAI

Dusk in the Supernatural was made for these fearless adventurist crescendo-rockers. Their breathtaking balancing act of fragile beauty and occasional overwhelming sonic terror will cause audible gasps in the giant Ghost Gums. There’s an open-ended vastness about Mogwai that perversely (it was conceived in Glasgow) seems like it will be perfectly at home in the wide open Victorian pastoral landscape. Glorious. A moving experience. Brutal, loud, ethereal.

TONY ALLEN

There’s an argument that goes like this: Afrobeat is the funkiest thing in the history of the world. The “beat” aspect of that is the Original Source. The man responsible for said Beat is the original source of the original source. Tony Allen is that man. The master. The source. The one. He was the drummer and Musical Director of Fela Kuti’s iconoclastic band Africa 70. Fela once stated that “without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat”. Brian Eno once stated Tony Allen is “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived”. Is that not something you’d want to see at least once in your life? Truly a bona fide legend. All the way from Nigeria. Bringing a big band.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

GARY NUMAN

The alien, the Outsider, the electric man. The original paranoid android.

His music was always from the future; now it is here. And it sounds even better.

Gary Numan at The Supernatural Amphitheatre???? Yes its true!

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

BLACK MOUNTAIN

There’ll be plenty of muttered “YES” s out there on reading these Canadian bearded rockers are making their first trek to Oz. Very highly regarded, and bloody great fun to listen to. In “Stormy High” they have one of the best rock jams of recent times; it. is. KILLER. There’s bundles more too, tunes upon tunes upon tunes, delivered with a supreme rockin’ sound and charisma to burn. Blacky Mountain High.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

OF MONTREAL

On a recent European vacation, Aunty witnessed this wild ensemble live in full pomp in a Barcelona club, with singer Kevin Barnes (aka Georgie Fruit) dressed like a 70s glam kingpin whipping a thousand-odd Spaniards into a dancefloor frenzy. Very, very impressed. It became a mission to entice these Athens, Georgia natives to the arguably less-exotic expanses of the Golden Plains Shire. Invitation accepted! Of Montreal finally make their Australian debut concert appearance! They have an extensive and passionate fanclub here, and in many other parts of the world. They get good press. Here’s a random sample: “their last album “Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?” was so rich with cathartic pop goodness it’s easy to forget Barnes supposedly morphed into a middle-aged African-American transsexual midway through the album.” We like that sort of thing.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

THE DRONES

It has been said more than once lately that The Drones are the best band in the land. They hit the scene hard in about 02 along with a horrid blitz of bands that APPEARED to be the real thing. The fact The Drones survived, went away and came back a hundred times stronger is testament to the fact that, in their case, it is real. I’d be happy to hear Gareth order a kebab let alone sing those incredible songs. Infidels, gypsies; wiry intelligent tough individuals. The Drones are something else. We thank them.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

THE CHURCH

Australia’s biggest ever cult band? Unlike so many of their peers from Then, The Church have not stopped making interesting, quality, vital music. Their entire body of work, like so many of their songs, is dense, richly-detailed and dynamic. Tear It All Away. The Unguarded Moment. Almost With You. When You Were Mine. Tantalized. Maybe These Boys. You Took. Electric Lash. Under The Milky Way. Reptile. Metropolis. You’re Still Beautiful. Numbers. Block. Easy. A hundred more. Listening to their neo-psychedelic albums is like visiting another planet for a while, so complete is the New World they created for the listener. And in amongst all that, a genuine Top 30 hit in America. Willful, playful, brave, inventive… AMAZING. Grace.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

DAN DEACON

Born from the Baltimore DIY party scene, Dan Deacon defines what it is to be a Performer. He spends most of the set performing from within the audience, thus making audience and performer One. He has a degree in electro-acoustic composition and once did an entire U.S tour via the Greyhound bus system.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW

Championed by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch, Old Crow are from Nashville and are about the Finest in Good Ol’ American Roots Music, circa 2009. It’s a highly social sound, designed for enjoyment in the live realm, and takes in the best of Appalachia, Memphis, Louisiana and Tennessee, via Nashville, New York State and North Carolina. They’ve opened for Dolly Parton, played the Grand Old Opry, stormed Bonnaroo and sold a ton of albums. Draw a curly line from folk around everything to rock and you’ll see O.C.M.S appear.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

BRANT BJORK AND THE BROS

A bunch of friends have been at us for years to get Brant Bjork to the Supernatural. “he’d be perfect” “why haven’t you?” “surely this year?” etc etc. Recently Aunty was listening to the Ghost’s Friday arvo eclectic epics and the best first-listen track heard in maybe a decade hit. It was, quite simply, phenomenal. Who is this? Missed the back-announce, had to ring the station. “that was Brant Bjork..” Aunty’s mind hit the dirt wheels spinning. Invitation sent. RSVP in. YES!! Brant Bjork was the drummer in Kyuss. He describes his current, perfectly-baked group The Bros as “organic rock, it grooves, it flows, it’s psychedelic, it’s tough, it’s beautiful, it’s classic”.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

QUINTRON AND MISS PUSSYCAT

Quintron and Miss Pussycat are a mysterious duo outta New Orleans. Quintron is from Mobile, Alabama and plays this thing he invented called the ‘Drum Buddy’, a light-activated drum machine. He once made a record with The Oblivans. Miss Pussycat is from Antlers, Oklahoma and is apparently “unlike anything you will ever see in a rock club”, to quote a renowned Melbourne musician who really would know.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

DJ MUJAVA

A local of Attridgeville, South Africa, Elvis Maswanganyi is DJ Mujava. His flagship tune “Township Funk” blew many minds upon last years release - though it was by then a bona fide cult classic in his hometown. Apparently it was rare to find a cab driver not playing the 21 year olds music there, thus making him a local hero in his township. Influenced by classic American house music and the homegrown Kwaito music, Mujava sounds like it could be from some other dimension.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

THE BLACK SEEDS

A fine example of New Zealand’s #1 natural resource - dub music - The Black Seeds have been all around the world doing their thing but they’ve never been to Meredith. Even if original member, Flight of the Conchord Brett McKenzie won’t be in tow, expect some killer grooves and big horns to move to in the afternoon light.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

CANYONS

Wonderful new music fresh and exciting to the ears is one of life’s never-ceasing-to-amaze delights. Made even more delightful when Made not too far from home. In this case, two lads from Perth calling themselves Canyons are Making Exciting New Music. Are they Acid-Tropicalia? Shoegaze-techno? Assemble at the Supernatural, late late Sunday nite, to witness.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

BRIDEZILLA

Few acts ever have the sort of intensity you witness in Bridezilla. Even fewer have it when they are teenagers. Bridezilla’s sound is like post-punk grown up. A chaotic violin, piercing sax sound and a dramatic vocal style, there are many reference points but nothing quite like this anointed Sydney five-piece.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

MY DISCO

It’s with great pleasure to announce the return of local favourite My Disco to The Supernisco. We were lucky enough to convince these guys to do one final Australian set before jetting off on a world tour taking in Leipzig, St Petersburg and Alabama, to name just a few places this Melbourne trio will visit post-Golden Plains. Golden Plains is what it is because bands like this* exist in this part of the world. (*there are no bands quite like My Disco)

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

DAN KELLY WITH THE UKELADIES

Dan Kelly is Excellent. Many have known it a long time. His lyrics are intelligent, funny, and sometimes sweetened or bittered-to-taste. His songs appeal greatly. He’s charming, popular and seemingly always in good-humour. He’s good company, even if that company numbers about 7500 - or more for that matter. Last seen in The Superdanural with the much-missed Alpha Males, DK will make his Golden Plains debut with the Ukeladies, the worlds finest “faux-Hawaiian” duo, making his Excellent songwriting talents more evident than ever before. DKWTU are Excellent and Terrific.

MYSPACE

PIVOT

What happens when you mix three great musicians, a passion for math-rock, IDM, Italio prog and kraut-rock? Other than a list of silly genre names, you might end up with Pivot. Founded by brothers Richard and Lawrence Pike, Pivot are signed to the legendary Warp imprint and are the group you could envisage their label mate Aphex Twin forming had he not been a soloist. They have rightly garnered an ardent fanclub around the globe, all loving that off-kilter unignorable groove the band sets up and takes for a wobbly walk.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

LULUC

One of the most exquisite albums of the past year is the debut album by Zoe and Steve aka Luluc. Pure, unadorned, plain-spoken honest and direct songs. A beautiful set of delicate folk songs ideal for waking the rest of you up gently on Sunday morning after your body has made the pilgrimage from tent to amphi.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

THE HARPOONS

Further evidence that Eighties Babies dig The Fifties, The Harpoons’ streetcorner-harmonies and hip-shaking tunes caught Aunty’s ear one night at the corner of Smith & Johnston… ” perfect way to open The Third Golden Plains..” she excitedly mused. Damn these guys are good, some of the sweetest pipes around, young or old. If rock n roll had a national draft, these guys might be 2009’s # 1 pick.

MYSPACE

DEAF WISH

Tough, unaffected rock is a hallmark of Melbourne’s music community. Deaf Wish are a young group that carry on this tradition, inject it with a new intensity and have become a ‘must-see’ for local music heads. Sometimes their energy gets so hyper you feel like the whole thing might come asunder. That’s what we like to see.

MYSPACEYOUTUBE

SWEET JELLY ROLL

Something a little different for The Late Nite set this year. Sometimes The Formula gets too formulaic and you know in your bones Its Time For a Tweak. One of Melbourne’s most inspired club nights Sweet Jelly Roll bring their swingin party to the Supernaturoll. Two hours, three DJ’s, old time R&B, Vegas Grind, Rockabilly, Gypsy Swing, Surf and The Like. The sorta jive Aunty went dancing to at the Meredith Memorial Hall back when she was a hip young chick.

MYSPACE

JIM WHITE AND JOHN DOE

Jim White was born in 1957 in Pensacola, Florida to a Pentecostal family, and was influenced in his childhood by gospel music. According to various sources, he has been a comedian, a fashion model, a boxer, a preacher, a professional surfer, and a New York cab driver. Before embarking on a music career, White attended film school at New York University, and entered a self-described “deep hole of sickness and depression and poverty”. However, during a party organized by film school friends, White began to perform, and began writing material for an album soon afterward.

John Doe was born John Nommensen Duchac in 1954 in Decatur, Illinois. He is singer, songwriter, actor, poet and bass player who was the founder of the legendary and massively influential LA punk band X. His musical compositions and performances also include country and folk music. He is also a film and television actor, appearing in such films as Roadside Prophets, Salvador, Boogie Nights, and music videos for The Doors’ “LA Woman” and The Ramones “Something to Believe In”.

Jim White and John Doe have never before performed live together. That will be happening at The Third Golden Plains.

MYSPACEMYSPACE

YOU AM I

Why explain? There’s a reason why this band still pulls big crowds and Aunty still gets so many requests for them. Great songs, great sounds, sure. But you also never fail to see A SHOW. A rock’n'roll show. Unplanned, sometimes unhinged and always unreal.
